About Me: Michelle T Smith

My art practice relates to the nostalgic connections to the past- both immediate and distant past. Through images, collected things, colours and use of familiarity I want my work to be a catalyst connection to past memories. I aim to evoke a nostalgic response to the art by bringing a new way to see a familiar object whilst still preserving the origin of the object.

In the majority of my work the original source begins with a digital manipulation of a photograph and results in artworks which are in some cases representative and speak of an evanescence (fading away) and in others map life’s cycles. The photographs are reinterpreted in ceramics, painting, digital manipulation and ink. I collect things that have a connection to the past or memories.

When I work with porcelain and clay, I am reminded that influences in my life are constantly changing. My influences often inspire a piece, either with memories, photos or current happenings. The images I use are influenced by the moment which will ultimately become history, but these images are utilised to inform the future.

I love the way the mark making in the ceramics surfaces records the history of its production, and particularly the contrast in the luminosity of the porcelain. I love the way it provides authenticity to a new object without losing anything from their own identity. Moments, chance, and deliberate actions ultimately become embedded in the works and are historically preserved.
